Types Of High Bay LED Lights
High bay LED lights come in various designs to cater to different application scenarios and provide specific features. The primary designs are round, linear, and modular.
Round High Bay Lights
Round high bay lights, also known as UFO high bay lights, have evolved from traditional cylindrical luminaires with a top-mounted electrical box and large aluminum reflector to low-profile, aesthetically pleasing designs. The UFO high bay lights are not just designed for a sleek architectural look; their disc-shaped heat sink, which serves as the luminaire housing, provides increased surface area to accommodate a large LED module. This design facilitates a more uniform light distribution and allows the waste heat generated by the LED array to spread quickly across the heat sink. These heat sinks are made from die-cast or cold-forged aluminum. The LED module is an assembly of LEDs mounted on a metal core printed circuit board (MCPCB), and a lens array regulates the luminous flux from the LEDs, eliminating the need for bulky aluminum reflectors. The LED driver is housed separately in an aluminum enclosure or a thermally independent compartment.
Linear High Bay Lights
Linear high bay LED lights are divided into two categories: traditional style and integrated linear fixtures.
- Traditional Style: These luminaires resemble traditional two-to-eight lamp T5/T8 fluorescent fixtures and have housings made from extruded aluminum or die-formed, cold-rolled steel. The light assembly includes several lumen maintenance trays with linear LED strip modules that direct light at the desired beam angle.
- Integrated Linear Fixtures: These fixtures, often used in racked/aisle environments but also suitable for open areas, have a rugged, extruded aluminum housing that provides mechanical strength and heat sinking. The linear light assembly consists of one or more LED modules on a rectangular circuit board, with a one-piece lens array regulating the light. The LED drivers are mounted in a gear compartment that is integrally constructed with the housing but thermally isolated from the light assembly.
Modular High Bay Lights
Modular high bay LED lights offer scalability in light output, versatility in light distribution, and flexibility in lighting design. These fixtures are assemblies of modular LED engines and externally mounted drivers. Each modular LED engine is a self-contained system that is thermally managed, environmentally protected, and optically regulated. However, the power supply is not built into the system; instead, it is powered by drivers located in a back-mounted gear box. The housing/heat sink is made of die-cast or extruded aluminum, and the LED assembly is similar to that of UFO or integrated linear high bay luminaires.
